What is the order of book in the Lord of the Rings series?

I'm a HUGE Harry Potter geek ("Dumbledork", some may call me...), and my mom suggested that I read the Lord of the Rings series. I am completely open to it (and finding something to read OUTSIDE of HP). Can someone please tell me the order in which to read the series. Oh, and I'd love other suggestions of what to read, along with something sort of like a synopsis. I'm open to anything!
