Car accident with no insurance... help!?

I really need help on this.. My dad "gave" me his car but was still making payments on it so it is in his name. I asked him for the insurance and he said he had it but he would always find a way to not give me the papers... One day I had a small accident and come to find out he lied about the insurance (my dad is that guy who tries to pay less for everything, he is very cheap and a schemer) well, I paid 500$ for the citation even though he said he would and we owed the other persons insurance company 2900$. Well, that was in october. He told me that he was making 100$ payments and so had already paid 1000$. Come to find out just a week ago, ALL lies and now its on MY credit.! I was told that I shouldn't have to pay that. Should I get a lawyer and make him pay for his fault??? He could have at least told me. Now my license is about to be suspended for 3 years and risk of emprisonment... I'm 5 months pregnant!!!! Help!
