Is British science fiction all the same?

I've seen episodes of Doctor Who and watched Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and read the synopsis for Red Dwarf. Everyone of these shows seem like ridiculous comedic nonsense. Is there no such thing as a serious British science fiction show? Star Trek, Star Wars even the Stargate series was darker than this comedic dribble. Can someone name me a British series that actually takes itself seriously?
