Trying to find the title of a book?

hmmmm the closest thing to that i can think of is a book called 'dirt bike racer' it was published in 1986 and is about a boy named Ron who finds a dirt bike at the bottom of a lake and gets a job and fixes it up. Although the synopsis you gave does sound strangely familiar.
